Why Your Mental Health Deserves More Than a 15-minute Med Check

If you have ever been to a typical doctor’s office for mental health, you know the routine. You sit in a waiting room, get called back for a 15-minute "med check," and leave with a prescription. It feels like you are a number on a clipboard or a "diagnosis code" rather than a real person.

This is the insurance model. Because insurance companies pay less for longer visits, doctors are often forced to see as many people as possible in a single day.

I decided to do things differently. By practicing as a private pay psychiatrist, I can step away from that "revolving door" and offer something much deeper. Here is why that matters for your health and your soul.

1. More Time to Find the Root Cause

In the insurance world, 15 minutes is barely enough time to ask, "How is the medication working?" In my practice, we take the time to listen and collaborate.

When we have longer visits, I can use functional medicine. This means looking for physical reasons why you might feel anxious or depressed that have nothing to do with a "chemical imbalance." For example, I once saw a patient named Justin who was struggling with Bipolar Disorder. By taking the time to run special labs, we found:

  • A nutritional deficiency (called pyroluria) that was draining his body of Vitamin B6 and Zinc.

  • A hormone issue caused by a small, non-cancerous growth on his pituitary gland.

Because we had the time to look deeper, Justin didn't just get another pill; he got his life back. He returned to work and even got a promotion. In a quick insurance visit, those clues might have been missed entirely.

2. You Are an "Embodied Soul"

I believe that human beings are "fearfully and wonderfully made." We are not just a collection of chemicals, but we aren't just floating spirits, either. We are embodied souls.

This means your physical body (brain and biochemistry) and your non-physical nature (mind, will, and emotions) are totally connected.

  • If you are physically exhausted or missing nutrients, you might feel "lazy" or "unmotivated."

  • If your mind isn't being renewed by spiritual truth, your body can feel the stress and tension.

Because I don't answer to insurance companies, I can offer Biblical counseling alongside medical science. We can talk about your faith and your health at the same time, treating the whole person, mind and body.

3. Medicine as a "Common Grace"

Some people think taking medicine is a sign of weak faith. Others think medicine is the only answer. I see it differently.

I believe medicine is a common grace. It is a gift from God that helps us use our knowledge of nature for good. I want to be honest with you: a pill cannot fix every problem. However, medication can be a helpful tool to stabilize your symptoms so that we have the "breathing room" to work on the deeper spiritual and physical causes.

A Shift in Mindset

If you are frustrated with the "quick-fix" culture of modern medicine, I want to encourage you to have hope and patience. True wellness is an investment, not a transaction. There are no "magic buttons," but there are many tools available to help you flourish. When we move away from the insurance model, we stop rushing and start a journey together toward healing.

The Goal: To move past just "managing symptoms" and start understanding the wonderful, complex person you were created to be.
