Frequently Asked Questions
What is Strong Mind Medicine?
It is a private, cash-based, fee-for-service psychiatric medical practice providing evaluation (assessing a person's mental health status by interview and other measures) and, if indicated, determining a diagnosis (describing what is wrong or ruling out other conditions) and recommending treatment. What is a psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health disorders. Unlike psychologists or other mental health professionals, psychiatrists have completed medical school and are qualified to prescribe medication. Their training typically includes:Medical School: 4 years of general medical education with training in all major medical specialties (e.g., Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cardiology, etc.)
Residency in Psychiatry: 4 years of specialized training in mental health, where they learn about various psychiatric disorders, psychotherapy, and the use of medications and other treatments
Fellowship: Advanced training in an additional specialization (e.g., Addictions, Forensics, Sleep Medicine, Palliative Care, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, etc.)
Dr. Guthrie is double board-certified (Adult & Forensic Psychiatry) and trained in Functional and Biblical Counseling.
Can I see Dr. Guthrie even if I don't or don't want to take medications?
Yes. While Dr. Guthrie is trained to prescribe medications when absolutely needed, many men come here looking for a different path: One that addresses the whole person. Whether you're trying to get off medications, avoid starting them, or just want to get control of your thoughts, we offer care that fits your goals.Do you treat children?
Dr. Guthrie sees patients 14-65 years old.Can you do Adult ADHD testing?
Dr. Guthrie does not offer psychological or neuropsychological testing
Dr. Guthrie does offer a one-time diagnostic appointment which is the same price as the initial visit. In this 90-minute visit, you will get a direct evaluation and diagnosis (if indicated) and medication/lab recommendations. *Please note: A diagnosis is not guaranteed.
Do you provide psychotherapy (talk therapy)?
No. Man-centered psychotherapy is not consistent with Dr. Guthrie's position or philosophy of best practices. However, if appropriate as part of the treatment plan, Dr. Guthrie offers Biblical Counseling, which is God-centered and grounded in Scripture. How do I know if I should see a therapist and/or a psychiatrist?
Both can help with mental health and they do different things. A therapist helps you talk things through. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor trained to diagnose and treat mental illness, including adjusting medications when needed. If you’re dealing with deeper issues like severe anxiety, sleep problems, depression, or you're trying to get off or manage medication, a psychiatrist can guide you through the medical side while still seeing the whole person and talking through problems with good counsel.Do you accept insurance?
Like many other cash fee-for-service private psychiatry offices, we are NOT participating in insurances and are out of network. We can provide documentation for you to file your own claims for reimbursement from insurance, but results are not guaranteed.Do you provide Tele-health appointments?
Yes, We do. You get the same quality care if you are located in the states of VA, NC, SC, TN, NJ, LA, TX, OH, WA, and ID. “You’ll receive a welcome email with clear next steps, what to expect in your first visit, and access to me in between via HIPPA approved secure messaging. No guessing—just fluid, transparent care.”Do you provide In-Person appointments?
Yes, We do. Strong Mind Medicine office is located in Marion, VA.How much are your services?
The initial comprehensive evaluation is USD$495, and 50/25-minute follow-up visits are USD$350/$250.Is it really worth paying out-of-pocket for this?
Most men I work with have already tried pushing through, working harder, or waiting it out. That only works for so long. Paying out-of-pocket gives you control. It comes with no insurance red tape and no generic care. You get direct access, focused treatment, and real progress. That kind of clarity and follow-through is worth it.
What is the difference between psychiatrists and psychologists?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (M.D.) who can prescribe medications and focus on all aspects of mental health, while psychologists have graduate degrees in psychology (Ph.D., Psy.D.) and specialize in testing, psychotherapy, and behavioral interventions.
